  • description

  • Architectural photographer David Cardelús uses compelling, graphic images of Barcelona’s buildings and architectural details to create a portrait of a city that unearths moments the reader may not have noticed before. These quasi-invisible moments in the city Cardelús was born and raised in are what drive him as a photographer and artists. Cardelús’ black and white photographs usher the public realm into a state of serenity. Minimalist snapshots of the city of Barcelona: the juxtaposition of two buildings, two textures; an illuminated façade; an art nouveau entryway are laid forth for readers to expose the realities behind the city skyline. These images are not simply a time capsule of a contemporary city, but they create a portrait of a city that’s constantly in flux and continuously changing its urban landscape in creative and innovative ways. Barcelona: Portraits of the City aims to open the reader’s eyes, through a selection of 150 black and white images, to the various realities of the city’s past and present by displaying both the familiar and iconic, as well as the mundane and overlooked aspects of the city skyline. This makes the book a powerful portrait for both those who are curious about the city as outsiders and those who are native to Barcelona and already fully entangled in its dynamic urban fabric.
