  • Over the last ten years, China has been at the center of an unprecedented boom in high quality architecture and urbanism. The world’s next global superpower, able to build projects that would be impossible in other countries, has become a natural laboratory for new architectural ideas and trends. “100 Twenty-First Century Masterpieces: China,” is a comprehensive selection of the most extraordinary buildings built in China in the last five years. Featuring works by both little-known local firms and renowned international architects, the diversity of buildings presented here includes public and private projects of all shapes and sizes. Covering the traditional Chinese metropolises and states, such as Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong and Taiwan, the selected projects also take us across the entire nation to other fast-growing economic and cultural centers including Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Harbin. Looking back a few years to projects such as the complex and stadia built for the Beijing Olympics and also focusing on more recent landmark buildings, including the Guangzhou Opera House by Zaha Hadid, the Vanke Center by Steven Holl, the Giant Interactive Group Headquarters by Morphosis, and the Shenzhen Stock Exchange by Rem Koolhass, this book is a powerful statement about how dreams can become a reality in what was formerly seen as a “sleeping giant.” • Presented in large format to properly document the expansive, complex projects featured, this book, at over 800 pages, aims to become the definitive study of a remarkable story. Each specially selected building is discussed with full sets of photographs, drawings and descriptive texts. Curated by architecture publisher Oscar Riera Ojeda and the Toronto University professor Rodolphe el-Khoury, the book explores the challenges and realities of building great architecture in a land where surprises never cease • “100 Twenty-First Century Masterpieces: China” is also available in a clamshell box in a limited edition of 500 copies.
