“"The form of the architecture is already buried in the stone, so context is enormous. I don't bring a vision to anything. I let everything into my palette and connect all that to the framework in which we live. I turn everything upside down and try to distill it to its basic ideas and proportions.” Cecil Baker, AIA”

Introduction and Text by Cheryl Weber

Philadelphia architect Cecil Baker’s half century career has been marked by contradictions: he is both an Argentine and an Englishman; an architect and a developer; a builder of abodes for the rich and the cash-strapped alike. Within these contrasting worlds he has produced buildings that seek to bring order to chaos, permanence to the ephemeral.

This rich volume reflects on a body of work through the lens of the designer himself. As both an architect and a developer in the 1970s, Baker and his colleagues transformed industrial neighborhoods in Philadelphia into oases that combined residential, office and retail components. Founding Cecil Baker + Partners in 1982, Baker has repeatedly enriched the urban realms of Philadelphia and other cities and designed unique houses for clients worldwide.
